The Glamorous Side of Greenhouses

Introduction

We all know that greenhouses are useful for growing plants and flowers, but did you know that they can also be beautiful? From a 19th-century greenhouse in Ireland to an ornate, tiled conservatory on the grounds of a French chateau, these historic structures incorporate elements from various eras and countries. Some are still in use today while others are museum pieces—all while serving as living examples of how much the art of landscaping has evolved over the centuries.

The Muckross House & Gardens

The Muckross House & Gardens is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s an award-winning National Heritage Site and National Monument, which means that it has been recognized by the government as being of great historical value. The house was built in 1843 and designed by architect Thomas Newenham Deane.

The Muckross House is surrounded by several acres of gardens that make up the grounds at this attraction. Visitors can tour the property at their own pace, take photographs or enjoy some quiet time in this tranquil oasis. They can also spend time outside exploring a nearby lake or walking through woodland areas with views across Killarney National Park (another UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The Palm House in Belfast, Northern Ireland

The Palm House in Belfast, Northern Ireland is a Victorian glasshouse that was built in 1862. It is a Grade A listed building and part of the Botanic Gardens.

Many people visit this beautiful greenhouse to see the tropical plants and flowers inside. They are also fascinated by how these exotic plants can grow in such harsh conditions on Earth as they would be in their natural habitats.

The Palm House has been restored several times over the years since it was built, but it still looks just as impressive as it did back then!

Château de la Bourdaisière in Tours, France

Château de la Bourdaisière is located in Tours, France. The château was originally built in 1625 and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of French Renaissance architecture. It has been restored numerous times over the centuries, but its greenhouse still remains relatively intact. In fact, this structure is one of only two remaining examples of a 17th century greenhouse!

The château’s gardens are full of plants and flowers from around the world; it was once known as “the Versailles of the West” due to its extensive collection of exotic plants from around the world (there were even rumors that Marie Antoinette would come visit).

In order to maintain these exotic flowers and plants, there had to be some way for them all to live indoors throughout winter months—hence why we have greenhouses today!

Ca’ Rezzonico in Venice, Italy

Ca’ Rezzonico is a palazzo on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. It was built for the patrician Bon family, who were related to the noble family of the same name. The original palace was built in 1430 by Francesco Contarini, a member of a patrician Venetian family which had been active in politics since before 1200 AD. In 1569 it was bought by Nicolò Pisani and his wife Elisabetta Zeno Boni. The building remained in their hands until they died childless in 1668 when it passed to their nephews Giorgio and Pietro Boni.[2]

In 1750 Giorgio Bon asked his brother-in-law Gianbattista Tiepolo (the son of Domenico) to decorate three rooms on first floor: two salons with frescoes and one bedroom with mosaics.[4] Gianbattista Tiepolo also painted some canvases for Ca’ Rezzonico.[3][5] Between 1750 and 1755 Vincenzo Scamozzi designed an extension towards Rio Terrà Calle Manin – today known as Palazzo Querini Stampalia – which included three additional floors with balconies above water level; these were demolished after World War II but remain visible from exterior walls.[6][7]

The last member of this branch died in 1867 so that then Ca’ Rezzonico became property of Municipality which sold it privately again only ten years later; its new owner then restored all rooms except those decorated by Tiepolo which were kept as they were before restoration began
