How to Make a Planter Box: A simple guide for making your own planter box.

Introduction

You can make your own planter box without too much difficulty, but it’s often a good idea to keep things simple. This guide will show you how to accomplish that with a simple, rectangular planter box.

Create the frame.

  • Cut the pieces to size
  • Place the pieces together and use a mallet to tap them into place (you may find it easier to work on a scrap piece of timber first)
  • Use a spirit level across the frame and adjust so that it is level, then mark where all four corners need cutting by using an angle grinder with an abrasive wheel or hand saw (if you are using an angle grinder, remember to wear protective clothing).

Cut the pieces of your frame to the length you want your box to be.

Before you start building your planter box, you’ll need to cut the pieces of your frame to the length that you want it. I chose this length because it fit perfectly along my wall and was safe for my cats to reach into without having to jump up on anything.

If you are using wood like me, make sure that all of the pieces are cut exactly the same size and shape so that they will fit together tightly once assembled. If possible, use a power saw if at all possible so that these cuts can be made quickly and accurately (and safely). If not possible, use a manual miter saw or table saw as best as possible with precision clamps holding everything down until each cut is made; then remove clamps before making next one!

After each piece has been cut according to its intended dimensions, check all pieces for squareness—this means measuring diagonals from corner-to-corner on both sides of each individual section at 90 degrees relative orientation (i.e., left side x right side).

Attach the sides to the base.

Attach the sides to the base.

Use deck screws for this step and make sure you attach them in a way that will allow for drainage. Use an appropriately sized drill bit so that the screw goes in with minimal effort, but not so much that it creates another hole in your wood. Also, make sure that there are no gaps between the two parts of your planter box—everything should be flush and aligned evenly.

Screw 2-inch deck screws through the side boards into the ends of the base boards. Repeat on the other side.

  • Use an electric drill to make holes for the screws, then use a screwdriver to drive in the screws.
  • Make sure the screws are long enough to go through both sides of your frame, but not so long that they poke out of your base or side boards when you’re done!
  • Make sure all three sets of screws (two on each end) are evenly spaced apart from each other at regular intervals (this will depend on how big your piece is).

Add supports at each corner and in between if you wish to have a bottom for your planter box.

To make your planter box bigger, add supports at each corner and in between if you wish to have a bottom for your planter box. Use 2x4s or 2x6s for the supports and screws to attach the supports to the side boards.

Screw through the side boards into each end of the supports. Repeat on the other side.

Now that you have the supports cut out, it’s time to attach them to your boards. To do this, you’ll need a power drill or screwdriver (or even better, a power drill gun).

If using a power drill: Attach one end of each support firmly into the corner of one end board. Hold that end and then center the other side against the edge of an adjacent board and screw through both sides simultaneously. Repeat on other corners until all four corners are attached together with four screws per corner. If using a regular screwdriver instead of a power tool: You can still use this method but make sure that each hole is drilled deep enough for two screws so as not to weaken your wood unnecessarily by splitting when drilling too many holes at once where only one would suffice

You can make your own planter box out of wood without too much difficulty

  • You can use any wood you want.
  • You can use any type of wood.
  • You can use any size of wood.
  • You can use any kind of stain you want, or no stain at all! (Stain is optional.)
  • You can also apply a sealer to the wood if you like, and then finish it off with an additional layer of polyurethane or another protective coating!

Conclusion

And that’s all there is to it! Now you’re ready to get growing.
