It doesn’t matter if you have a green thumb or not,” says Sarah, a seasoned gardener. “All you need is a little bit of knowledge and some basic gardening tools.”

Getting Started with Gardening

If you’re new to gardening, don’t worry – it’s easier than you think. Here are some steps to get you started:

  • Choose a location for your garden that gets plenty of sunlight and has good drainage. Select a variety of plants that are suitable for your climate and the amount of time you have to tend to them. Start with easy-to-grow plants like tomatoes, zucchini, and herbs like basil and mint.

As we’re seeing more sunlight each day, it’s important to remember that the best time to start gardening outdoors in Zanesville is after May 15th—that’s the golden rule, even if the weather looks nice for a while. Gardening is a perfect family activity, and it’s something you should put on your radar. “I would strongly recommend grabbing your children to come garden. In today’s world, we’ve got all those devices, and we’re always busy focusing on electronics. Get your children outside and teach them gardening,” Brown continued. “The mental health rewards — it’s stress-relieving to garden outside. You can be creative in how you want to garden, and just learning about nature is wonderful to teach our children. It helps us too. We connect with each other by doing that.”

The Garden Society will be holding their 22nd annual Spring Garden Symposium on March 1st, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.
